The early designs for the scout walker, or AT-ST, had the vehicle as a much smaller and lighter craft. The drive mechanism was located inside the cabin rather than underneath it, making for a rather cramped interior for the one crew member. The lack of space for a gunner meant that the 'chin' gun was omitted from this model; the tricky controls and side-mounted blasters were already more than enough for the unlucky test pilots of these early walkers to cope with.
